Hello and welcome to my blog! I’m Izze Perrella and I am a second year student studying a Bacholer of Commerce Degree at the Gustavson School of Business program, at the University of Victoria. Throughout my journey at university, I have gained several skills and improvements in my writing, mathematics, creativity and the ability to comfortably use multiple different appications and software. A course that sparked an interest for my educational journey was the University of Victoria’s art course ART 106. This course gave me the ability to communicate effectively and innovate, and showcase a talent for crafting compelling visual narratives that captivate into the marketing world through creating graphic designs.
Social media differs from other digital technolgies as these media platforms tend to be intrigated within our personal devices. This allows us to be able to have greater access to these media platforms than other digital technologies such as cable. I believe these useful resources provide both a volume and variety of information that I wouldn’t otherwise know to look for or have an interest in. It also provides me with news updates throughout the day from across the world.
I find that personalized learning is helpful as it encourages students like myself to take ownership of our learning process. Whether that be setting my goals, monitoring my progress in a class, or having a reflection on my learning outcomes. Being a university student I like to use digital tools to help build a stronger understanding on concepts I’m not confident on or tools that will enhance my work. These digital tools that I seek to be the most helpful for my learning is programming tools, collaboration platforms, software applications, and educational tools.
Digital Literacy is solving underlying problems through technologies supported by being safe, legal, and ethically responsible. It has an importance in education as it can help be a source for students to lean on for when needing support on an assignment or project. Hence digital literacy provides critical thinking, access to information, creativity and innovoation and so much more support.
An experience I had with Personalized Learning Networks (PLN) during my winter semester last year was when I struggled to understand a few concepts that were taught by my professor in my Statistics lecture. In order to develop a comprehensive understanding, I resorted to a PLN in the math and statistics centre where there is free help for students taking courses in those subject area. By staying consistent with my attendence at this help centre, I was able to gain assistence and developed a greater understanding on the sections I was confident in through the help of those tutors. I plan to utilize my PLN throughout this course by watching and looking through the tutorial videos or email for assistance when I am unsure of a specific topic or concentration area or need a better understanding on a concept.
